Abstract

Abstract

Background

Vembu Karpam is a Siddha medicine which is primary composed of Vembu, which is collected from 100 years old tree. It is primarily used for Uthiravatha Suronitham (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and the anticancer profile of this neem plant is no way newer and having potential cancer properties. Cancer still remains the major cause of mortality and morbidity all over the world. In the search of potential anticancer agents from the herbal origin, the present research work was carried out to examine the anticancer properties of  Vembu karpam

Objective

The objective is to determine the cytotoxic effect of the siddha herbal formulation Vembu Karpam.

Methods

In this study we selected two cancerous cell lines (Lung cancer A549, Breast cancer MCf-7) were studied the effect of the Vembu karpam  which is majorly originated from Azadirachta indica on the cell lines and accessed through MTT assays.

Results

Results showed the potent anticancer effect of  Vembu Karpam  in A549 shows LD50 in 71.57 µg/ml  and MCf50 shows LD 50 value as 39.78 µg/ml on human cancer cell lines Lung and Breast cells respectively.

Conclusion

The findings from this study indicated that the herbal medicine Vembu Karpam has potential as a medicinal drug especially in breast cancer and lung cancer treatments.
